Cris Passos Photography | Photographer Interview

A few words from Cris Passos Photography…

My name is Cris Passos and I am a natural light photographer based in South Florida. I am specializing in maternity, newborn and babies but my huge passion are the newborns. I always loved photography but never thought I would be a photographer. I’ve been in this business for 2 1/2 years and this has been my passion since then. I am married to my high-school sweetheart and we’ve been together for 19 years, we have 2 beautiful kids: Victor is 9 and Bella is 8. I am a brazilian girl but moved to the US in 2001 and have already lived at 12 different addresses. I am a chocoholic and a coffee lover.

If there was one thing you would want us to know about you, what would it be?

I eat chocolate every day, lol. I know it’s not good but i just love it!

Share with us your favorite image and why.

My favorite image is this one of baby Hadley. You know when you have a idea in your head for months? I did the yo-yo quilt, the bonnet, then finally bought this white prop that I was looking for months. I got fresh flowers to compliment the image and then when the session day came, baby Hadley was a dream to photograph. Not to mention, her mom and her grandmas were in complete awe when we set everything up. The image turned out beyond what I expected and I even got 3rd place at an international competition (NAPCP) – for the newborn category.

What inspired you to be a photographer?

It seems a little cliché but my passion started when I got my first DSLR. By that time I was only a “mom with a camera” shooting my little kids laughing, running, playing, crying… Until one day a friend showed me a whole new world by shooting manually. I got intrigued with all the new information and decided to learn everything about my camera. I started to practice with my own kids and my friend’s kids. Then when friends of friends started to ask me to do sessions for them, then that’s how everything got started.

How long was the transition from hobbyist to paid professional and how long have you officially been taking paid clients?

When we moved back from Massachusetts to Florida at the end of 2010, I decided to learn a little more about photography. I did some research online and a photoshop webinar. Finally in August of 2011 I decided to start my business.

What type of session do you look forward to the most (maternity, newborn, child, family, senior, wedding, engagement, etc) and why?

Newborns are my favorite to photograph. I love the all the emotion involved with the arrival of the little ones.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

Well I have so many, but if I need to pick one then I would say the one that the parents adopted a newborn 48 hours after he was born. It was a beautiful story.

Are you formally taught or self taught? And what has been the best source of information along this journey (workshop, online forums, classroom, mentor, etc)?

I never went to a photography school. In fact, I never thought I would become a photographer. I attended some workshops and I can definitely say I am self taught. I have an eagerness to learn so I have always done lots of research and practice. I am a member of some forums such as LSI, NAPCP, CHIC CRITIQUE, ROCK THE SHOT and spent hours reading and watching videos about photography.

What has been the biggest source of inspiration in your work?

My biggest source of inspiration in my work is walking around any craft store. I love to look at textures, fabrics and colors to get some ideas for my sessions.

Nikon or Canon, other? Favorite lens?

Canon, and my favorite lens is the 85mm 1.8 (1.2 is on my wish list).

 RAW or jpg and why?

RAW always. I am pretty confident about my SOOC images but we are humans and we do commit mistakes. Sometimes you are too busy looking at the kids running, or posing a baby outside that you may forget to check your camera settings. With a RAW file you can correct a mistake on your image.

Do you use Lightroom, Photoshop, both or other?

ACR and Photoshop.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

Be true to yourself. Work hard on finding your style and don’t follow trends as they will pass quickly.

What is your favorite and least favorite part of owning your own photography business?

There are 2 things I love the most about being a photographer. First is being around babies again since my kids are growing fast. The second is when I deliver a gallery to a client and see the joy and happiness in their faces when they see the results. The least favorite is when sometimes I get too busy and just can’t get really organized.

Who is the most inspirational photographer in your life?

Julie Paisley. I attended her workshop and she is the sweetest. She has a big heart and is always willing to help others.
